So...
If you clicked on the previous newslink from Latitude 38, you will have read that our friend/crew Brian commented that they had hoped the rescue attempt would bring a bit of good karma for the voyage south, yet alas (...or is it avast?) that was not to be!
Sailing southward, and just west of Big Sur, they heard a bang/boom/grinding noise and surmised that the (MaxProp) propeller had been compromised in some way and immediately shut down the engine.
As the winds were light and they were unable to sail, they were, fortunately, approximately 20 miles from Morro Bay, (and thanks to the ASA course that teaches this stuff!), they calculated how much fuel they had in the dinghy outboard and then rigged the dinghy up to the back of the Lass as a push device as they steered the boat into safety. They pulled into Morro Bay just as night was falling, dropped anchor, and slept like sailors.
Here are some amazing pics of the wildlife encountered as they floated and dinghy-motored along. One sea lion followed them for more miles than they could count, while a few birds hopped on to rest and ride along. And just when they thought about how relaxing this adventure was becoming (perhaps too relaxing!), the crew spotted two pair of Orca (ahem...Killer) Whales heading north, just 100 yards off the starboard side.
