Wine Tasting Tour

Day before yesterday, Bill and I (along with our new friends Lynn and Mike) hired a van to take us on a short ride to visit two of the (nearly forty) nearby wineries, Santo Tomas and L.A. Cetto.

Coincidentally, a gentleman by the name of Santiago, who (along with his family) owns the Santo Tomas winery (and many other holdings, including the largest bull fighting ring in Mexico City), pulled his sailboat up next to ours in our marina last week and will remain here for the summer.  Very nice fellow!

This particular latitude band matches that of the Tuscan wine region in Italy.  The wines we tasted (particularly the light, dry whites - including a "Rhine style" wine, of all things) are quite nice and surprisingly affordable.

Here are a few pics of our adventures in wine-ing.

Throwing Dietary Caution To The Wind (a.k.a. Sunday Brunch)

I promise!
So far, our culinary adventures have consisted mostly of fresh fruits and vegetables, vitamin C packed dried fruits, nuts, quinoa (gluten free, and yummy) pasta, the freshest fish and the occasional chicken and red meat.

Today, however, we threw caution to wind...and it was amazing!

A few weeks ago I walked with some friends to the home of a lovely Mexican woman who teaches Spanish, and in between classes she opens her doors for a Spanish Club, where participants are permitted to speak only in Spanish.  This particular week was a cooking lesson, for a fish in the "Vera Cruz" style of the Yucatan Penninsula.

After a few hours of meal preparation, conversation and laughter, as we were ready to eat, she pulled some refried beans out of the refrigerator as an accompaniment to the main course.  Curious me(!), I said I had always been fascinated as to how make refried beans, and she told me the secret (shhhhh!) is to make a flour rue.

I had tucked the rue "secret" away in the back of my mind until yesterday when Bill and I set out to find a recipe on the internet, but to no avail.  Apparently, flour rue is the ingredient used by professional chefs who do not normally publish their secrets.  Digging deeper, however, Bill uncovered two options and we were off to the races!

First we boiled the dried pinto beans that had been soaking overnight.  That took nearly two hours until they were just right.  Then we fried up some bacon (the second secret ingredient), and poured off the fat.  Then back to the beans, which were drained and put into a frying pan (with a rue of bacon fat and flour already prepared), mashed up and spiced with salt, chili powder and a dash of tabasco.

Finally, I cooked up a few farm fresh eggs and voila(!), an incredible brunch!  Bill chose to eat his rolled up in fresh, locally made tortillas while I opted for a simple plate.

Not particularly healthy, nor (it seems) politically correct, but hey....it tasted soooooo good!

Here are some pics of our work in progress  :0)

It Doesn't Get Any Fresher Than This...

This week begins the annual Ensenada Fishing Tournament and the Yellow Tail tuna are abundant!  Our Mexican friend and dockhand (nicknamed "Chilli"), gifted us with this beauty!

Here you can see Captain Bill as he skillfully fillets the fish under the watchful eye of a nearby seagull.

Guess what we had for dinner that night?

Yum!

Storybook Days

After a brief hiatus...

Here are a variety of photos taken over the past few weeks, including the manicured marina grounds and a sunset, Bill aboard Vision, one of our friends’ sailboats (a Tayana 48'), lunch in town (under the red umbrella), and a tour of the infamous “Jardines de la Rivera”, which was a 1930’s casino frequented by Al Capon and many celebrities (see plaque).

The casino is now being used as a cultural center, and I took quite a few photos of the gardens and the beautiful, ornate ceilings.

Truth be told, the buildings' interiors are in significant disrepair.  Even so, it is easy to imagine this “swinging” casino, south of the border, in the era of Prohibition.

About Last Night

Bill and I took an early evening walk and discovered a cozy little beach behind a ridge on the north side of our marina, just a stones' throw away.  We continued walking along the shoreline to discover the campus of the University of Azuays' School of Oceanography which featured a shore-side exhibit, and walked a bit further to uncover the resort at Punto Morro, which is truly spectacular.  Here is the link for Punta Morro;  http://www.hotelpuntamorro.com/El-Restaurante-en-Punta-Morro.html

I am such a weather wimp.  Bill was in a T-shirt and shorts, and I needed a jacket.  It must have been all of 75 degrees F.  Sheeesh!

Here are a few pics from our wanderings.

Aleks Syntek concert

(see previous post for link to info)

This guy is an incredible talent!  He played the drums, banjo, guitar, stand up bass, piano and harmonica. He has a great voice and his self composed songs are catchy, heartfelt and memorable.  We were was also amazed at the highly advanced stage technology and sound system.

Photos below are of the stage set up, seating arrangements, the multitude of waiters (food and wine were served at our individual tables, set for 8 people each...very civilized!), some concert shots, and fireworks at the end of the concert.  I also caught a cat snoozing on the boulders in the marina.

My favorite shot is the one that shows the waiters waiting for the action to begin, with the palm trees and hills in the background, and the one lone mast in the center of the shot in our marina.
