We Partied Like Rockstar Tourists!

Blogdate: Saturday, June 6, 2009

Have you ever toured your own hometown as if you were a tourist? With the arrival of the Dumons (Kim and Dave)and the Townsends (Susan and Daryl) from Somers, Montana, it was clear that our weekend agenda would be packed full of "touristy" action. Please join us on our photo tour, courtesy of Susan Townsend (featured solo, sharing her peace sign on an Angel Island Segway);

Saturday was set up to be the biggest adventure of all, as we hopped aboard the Tiburon Ferry and headed for the Angel Island Segway Tours, followed by a return to Sausalito and an afternoon of sailing aboard the Bonnie Lass.

A few words about both;
Angel Island is a small jewel of an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay with fortresses built during the Civil War (very well preserved!), World War I and World War II (including a now defunct missile silo). As almost everyone knows, Angel Island served as an entry point for Asian and other Pacific settlers arriving in America. What is less known is that the bread ovens built for the Civil War fortress are still operating and that school children regularly visit, donning appropriate era costumes and bake heavenly bread.

Segways are definitely the preferred mode of travel for yours truly. I watched bicycles attempting to struggle up the many steep inclines while we effortlessly whizzed by. If I had all day, it would be a lovely walk, with stopping points of interest along the way, however with 5+ miles of roadway, walking could be an all day affair (great if you have time) while the Segway Tour (with a guide) took only two hours. If you have a chance to ride a Segway, I highly recommend it. Very easy to do. Very cool vehicle! (Did anyone catch the Frazier episode when Niles Crane rode the Segway? I kept thinking of those very funny scenes all day!)

With the tour behind us, we headed back to Sausalito, jumped aboard the Lass, and headed out for near-perfect sailing conditions. The most fun I had was taking photos of Susan taking photos, a few of which I am able to post here (I always think the photos are more interesting than the narrative...)
