Let the Baja HaHa begin!

Our excitement continued to build during the two weeks prior to the HaHa start gun, as we spotted more and more of the HaHa burgees atop masts from all corners of world. Although the majority of sailors for this event are west coast folks, we would also sail with vessels that were here from Newport, RI, Maine, and New Zealand and I was amazed to learn that two crews had arrived in San Diego from Australia with the expressed purpose of buying boats and sailing them on this adventure.

The first official event of the HaHa is the Halloween Party, held in advance of Halloween, since we would all be at sea on October 31st. We were a bit too busy to get costumes, however, as you can see from these photos, the turnout was great and everyone had a blast! The winner of the costume contest was the crew of the sailboat Defiance, a Swan 54, owned by Peter and Peggy Noonan (...you may recall that Peggy Noonan was President Reagan's former speech writer, and remains a well known political author and commentator). Their crew was themed "Neptune", and their onboard chef dressed their grandbaby as a lobster, complete with lobster pot. Very funny!
