SF > SAN: Day 1 - written by sgp

We left Tiburon at sunrise with calm winds and glassy water.

We motored out through the gate against the tide under the Golden Gate Bridge. Matt and I had not been that far out past the gate. It was exciting. The water was glassy out in the ocean with swells about 1 foot. We reached out first waypoint and hung a left to begin our trip south!

A couple hours later we began to pass through a field of jellyfish. This continued for hours! So many jellyfish it was unbelievable. After a few hours we noticed something translucent and white near the surface. It was yet more jellyfish but this time another kind. More hours passed going through field after field of all these jellyfish.

Then off our starboard bow we heard it....pffftt....shhpfffftttt. A group of humpback whales slowly arching and breaching the surface.

We motored through the night trading off solo 3 hour shifts. Scott did 8:30-11:30 then Matt 11:30-2:30 and Bill 2:30-5:30. Night shifts are actually pretty amazing. It's very serene especially if you go forward and sit on the deck. Despite it being cold and damp, I was so bundled up in my foulies I went forward a number of times. it was like putting on a snow suit as a kid and excitedly jumping into a fresh snow bank knowing you weren't going to get cold.
